When Last / how often

How often should I feed my dog?

Short answer

Adult dogs: twice a day, roughly 8–12 hours apart. Puppies 8–12 weeks: 4 meals a day; 3–6 months: 3 meals; 6–12 months: 2 meals. Large and giant breeds should stay on two or more smaller meals for life rather than one big one.

Frequency by age and size

  • 8–12 weeks: 4 meals a day. Puppies have small stomachs and high energy needs, and toy breeds at this age can become hypoglycaemic if left too long between meals
  • 3–6 months: 3 meals a day
  • 6–12 months: 2 meals a day. Large breeds stay on a large-breed puppy formula until 12–18 months, because controlled growth rates matter for their joints
  • Adult: 2 meals a day. Once daily is common in some countries and tolerated by many dogs, but it leaves a long empty stretch and a large single volume
  • Senior: 2 meals a day, sometimes 3 smaller ones if digestion has become less reliable

Why one large meal is the wrong shape for a big dog

Gastric dilatation-volvulus — bloat — is a genuine emergency in which the stomach distends and twists, and it is fatal without surgery within hours. The risk is concentrated in large, deep-chested breeds: Great Danes, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles, Weimaraners, Setters, Boxers.

The recognised risk factors are worth knowing precisely, because two of them are about feeding pattern: a single large daily meal, eating rapidly, and vigorous exercise close to a meal. Splitting the ration across two or three meals, slowing eating down with a slow-feeder bowl or a snuffle mat, and leaving roughly an hour either side of a meal before hard exercise all reduce it.

One older piece of advice has been reversed by the evidence: raised bowls were long recommended and are now associated with increased bloat risk in large breeds. Feed at floor level unless your vet has advised otherwise for a specific reason.

The signs of bloat, since this is the one part of dog feeding where minutes count: unproductive retching, a visibly swollen hard abdomen, drooling, restlessness, pacing, collapse. That is an emergency vet, immediately.

How much, and how to check you are right

Start with the feeding guide on the food for your dog's ideal adult weight, split across the day's meals, and treat it as a starting point rather than a prescription — the guides run generous, and individual requirements vary by a factor of nearly two between a lazy neutered Labrador and a working Collie.

Then check body condition every couple of weeks rather than trusting the number. Ribs should be easy to feel with flat hands and light pressure. From above there should be a visible waist behind the ribs; from the side, an upward tuck to the abdomen. Adjust the total by about 10% at a time.

Treats count, and they are where most weight gain hides. Keep them under roughly 10% of daily calories and take that amount out of the meals. A large dental chew can carry more calories than a small dog's entire dinner.

When a feeding change is a symptom

This page describes general feeding patterns, not veterinary advice for an individual dog. Pancreatitis, kidney disease, allergies and prescription diets all change the answer.

  • Refusing food for 24 hours, or refusing water at all
  • Ravenous appetite with weight loss
  • Vomiting repeatedly, or diarrhoea lasting more than a day
  • Sudden food guarding or aggression around the bowl, which can be pain rather than behaviour
  • A puppy that misses two meals — small puppies destabilise quickly and this is a same-day vet call

So when did you last do it?

Dogs are excellent at claiming the second dinner and terrible at admitting to the first, and in a household of two or three people that is a reliable route to a quietly overfed dog. Twice a day is not hard to know; it is hard to agree on.

The medication schedule is the sharper version of the same problem. Flea treatment monthly, worming quarterly, a twice-daily tablet — all counted from a last time that lives in somebody's head.
