How often should I change my transmission fluid?
Conventional automatic: every 60,000–100,000 miles (100,000–160,000 km) in normal use, and every 30,000–60,000 miles if you tow or sit in traffic. CVT: every 30,000–50,000 miles (50,000–80,000 km). Manual gearbox: every 30,000–60,000 miles. A "lifetime" or "sealed" fill still benefits from a change around 100,000 miles.
"Lifetime fill" is a warranty term, not a physics claim
Many manufacturers now list no transmission fluid change at all, or list one at a very high mileage. This is worth reading precisely: the fluid is specified to last the design life the manufacturer warrants, which is not the same as the life you intend to get out of the car.
Automatic transmission fluid does a harder job than engine oil. It is a hydraulic fluid, a friction modifier for the clutch packs, and a coolant, and it degrades by heat and by collecting clutch material. When it is spent, the failure mode is not a light on the dash — it is a rebuild.
Get the fluid specification exactly right. Automatics are far fussier than engines: the wrong friction characteristic causes shudder and glazing even when the fluid is nominally "compatible". A CVT needs CVT fluid and nothing else. A dual-clutch box needs its own fluid, and often a separate one for the clutch pack and the gear oil.
What shortens the interval
Heat is the enemy, and everything on this list is a way of making the transmission hot:
- Towing, or carrying heavy loads — the most significant factor by a wide margin
- Stop-and-go traffic, where the torque converter slips constantly at low speed
- Sustained hills, both up and down
- Very hot climates
- Performance driving, launches, or track use
- A transmission cooler that is blocked or a radiator that is scaled internally
Drain-and-fill versus flush, and the old story about not touching it
You will hear that changing the fluid in a high-mileage automatic causes it to fail. The mechanism people describe — fresh detergent fluid dislodging deposits that were holding worn clutches together — is largely a myth in the form it is usually told, but the correlation behind it is real: a transmission already slipping is often changed as a last attempt, and then it fails anyway.
The safe, conservative approach on an unknown transmission is a drain-and-fill, which replaces roughly a third to a half of the fluid, repeated after a few thousand miles, rather than a high-pressure flush. Many transmissions also have an internal filter that should be replaced when the pan comes off.
Checking the level is model-specific and often nothing like checking oil. Some transmissions have a dipstick to read at operating temperature in park or neutral; many have no dipstick and require a fill plug at a specified fluid temperature. Reading the level cold, or on a hot box, gives numbers that are simply wrong.
How to tell it is due
- Shifts that have become slower, harsher, or hunt between gears
- A shudder or vibration at light throttle around 30–45 mph, which is often torque converter clutch shudder from tired fluid
- A brief delay between selecting drive or reverse and the car engaging
- Fluid that is brown rather than red, or that smells burnt — burnt smell means damage has already happened
- Any visible metal glitter on the drain plug magnet or in the pan
